Matthew McDermott Breaks Down New Jersey’s Gubernatorial Appointment Process

While the appointments process doesn’t always make headlines, it is one of the most critical responsibilities tied to Governor Sherrill’s success. As her administration takes shape, these early appointments play a key role in advancing the Governor’s agenda and shaping how state government functions day to day.

Drawing on his experience as director of appointments to Governor Chris Christie, we’re grateful to TZG’s Matt McDermott for sharing his insight into how New Jersey’s gubernatorial appointment process works and what those interested in public service should keep in mind early on.

New Jersey’s gubernatorial appointment process

Hello, it’s Matt McDermott from The Zita Group to share some Gubernatorial appointment insights as Governor Mikie Sherrill begins her administration.

As director of appointments to Gov Chris Christie, I can attest that the appointment process is one of the most critical and challenging responsibilities any administration undertakes.

Over the next four years, the Sherrill administration will appoint thousands of paid and volunteer positions necessary to execute the Governor’s agenda. This includes identifying, evaluating and promoting qualified candidates for judgeships and senior management positions across state government and for hundreds of authorities, boards and commissions.

The process includes direct appointments made by the Governor and gubernatorial nominations that require State Senate confirmation, known as advice and consent. Nominated positions include judgeships, prosecutors and most authorities, boards and commissions.

The nomination must be signed off by the senator or senators representing you in your county and legislative district. From there, your nomination must be considered and approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Finally, the full Senate must vote to approve.

How to Apply

For those interested in applying, visit the Governor’s website to apply for boards, commissions and authorities.

For judgeships and prosecutorial positions, contact your state senator. Note that a judicial questionnaire is required

What to Expect

Remember, this is not a linear process, so pursue your appointment interest, but be pragmatic and patient. Many negotiations go on behind the scenes between the Governor’s Office and the legislature that take time, strategic coordination and ultimately consensus. To improve your prospects, it’s best to secure a sponsor by reaching out to your local legislators, sharing your interest and qualifications and asking if they would help you.

And if appointed, serve with dignity and respect. It is a great honor to serve the people of NJ! For more insights and updates, book a call with our team.
